Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC) has become the first provider in the UK to deliver the IMI Awards Assessor of Accident Damaged Vehicles qualification as an apprenticeship.

Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC) has become the first provider in the UK to deliver the IMI Awards Assessor of Accident Damaged Vehicles qualification as an apprenticeship.

The new Level 3 Diploma allows bodyshops to access government funding for apprentices while still gaining an IMI Awards qualification.

The training is completely workplace based, so accident repair centres no longer need to lose valuable staff time by sending employees away for the existing four-day course. Qualified assessors from the college make site visits at the employers' convenience to monitor progress and carry out assessments throughout the minimum one-year course.

Rob Oldale, VDA Assessor for B&FC said, 'This is a unique qualification and a fantastic opportunity both for the College and repair centres. We've been working hard for the last three months to meet the IMI Awards approved centre criteria and have already begun working with our first intake of apprentices. There are clear benefits to industry in signing staff up for this qualification and we look forward to working with more employers in the future.'

The Howard Basford network, which has nine branches in the north west of England, has already teamed up with the college to train staff.

Sue Price, head of HR from Howard Basford, said, 'We are delighted to be working with the college in conjunction with the IMI on this exciting new venture. We look forward to enrolling our relevant staff at B&FC and giving them the opportunity to undertake the new Level 3 Diploma within the workplace, whilst also achieving VDA status. We pride ourselves on supporting the local community through apprenticeships and look forward to working with the college to ensure our apprentices gain recognised qualifications, whilst accruing valuable work experience.'
