Paul Killingsworth AAE MIMI, Proprietor of PK Automotive Solutions, and his employees hosted an open evening together with the Institute of the Motor Industry on the 27 November to update independent workshops on how apprentices are good for business and return a financial payback well within a three year apprenticeship.

Head of the Return on Investment Programme at the IMI, Paul Spear said "Using actual time-based apprentice and technician productivity data with itemised employer costs, the IMI has developed a model of the economics of automotive apprenticeships for independent and franchised businesses. Providing certain factors are in place, a home grown apprentice-trained technician can bring new ideas and IT-based diagnostic skills to an independent business and often outperform colleagues and market recruited technicians."

The event was attended by Karl McCartney, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Lincoln, and was co-funded by the UKCES (UK Commission for Employment and Skills).  The 130 attendees included Stuart James FIMI, Director, The Independent Garage Association (IGA) whose trainers delivered demonstrations on the health and safety of hybrid vehicles.

Attendees were also treated to updates on new technologies from Bosch UK Limited.

Steve Nash FIMI, Chief Executive of the IMI commented, "With the rapid advancement in new technologies it's imperative that all technicians constantly keep their skills up to date and independents especially see apprentices as not just a cost but a necessary future investment. The IMI were delighted to be able to support this event along with our other industry partners, The IGA and Bosch UK Limited."
